DEKAY’S “THE MEANING OF LIFE” ALBUM REVIEW
BY RUKAS

After she recently finished reviewing one of my own albums, [MASTER OF THE WORD) I promised Dekay I would get round to reviewing one of hers.
Her latest release “THE MEANING OF LIFE” is without a doubt the crowning achievement in the illustrious career of my good friend and fellow rapper Dekay.

Okaay….I have listened to this album a good few times over the last couple of days. Usually when she releases a project, Dekay comes to our house, and the three of us (Dekay, my missus Chogaia, and myself) listen to it together. We did that just the other day but I promised her that I would listen to it a few times on my own and give it a good review.

I have chosen to list my top 5 favourite songs, and review them, as opposed to reviewing the whole album in general. That being said I will however give a summary of the whole album at the end of this review. So here it goes. I will list my favourite songs in order, the top song being the best.

12 - STELLA STELLA.

Hah heh. The intro to this song was brilliantly done by Ross Sutherland. Those words? Totally true. Now, as my beverage of choice, the title of this song immediately perked my interest. The chorus that strikes that familiar chord within me “STELLA, STELLA, I’VE GOT TO HAVE YOU” coupled together with the fact that I have a very pickled liver myself due to copious amounts of said beverage, I feel I am very much an authority on this particular drink. Thus I can confidently review any subject to do with this. This track is without a doubt the best on the album for me personally. I absolutely love it! The chorus is incredibly catchy, and you find yourself singing along to it almost immediately. The verses themselves are very…homey… And will undoubtedly bring fond memories for those that have been brought up in council estates. (CAN I SAY THAT? It almost sounds like a slur) but honestly it is not Heh heh. I was brought up in council estates myself chill people lol. The song itself is reminiscent of MADNESS’s song OUR HOUSE. If you listen to yourself you will know what I mean, the local pub, cheap crisps Booze, corner shops, getting smashed was part of the norm. If you didn’t have at least one dysfunctional parent, and/or were not intoxicated on one substance or the other, be it drugs or alcohol, well… you were considered posh my friend. And this song brings you back to those days. We all KNOW the characters within this song, we’ve met them, and we used to laugh with them, used to get into trouble with them, used to take the piss out of them. Shit some of us WERE them. But consider particular subject itself, STELLA. The chorus has a very beautifully written and recited layer overlapping, which I absolutely love. Dekay knows I love my layers and this was done perfectly.
Well… I can write that alcohol song I wanted to do any more, as D has already done it. And to be honest, I don’t think I could have done any better. It is all here, the hangovers, the need for the drink, how you feel when you have the drink. Job done!

07 - LAWS ARE MADE BY PEOPLE.

FACKIN’ELL MATE. WHAT IN THE ACTUAL FUCK?! THIS IS…HARD! THE BEAT IS MASSIVELY EPIC. Well done to Midi Intellect for the production on this one, ya smashed it out the park with this one son, only thing wrong is that I’m not on it!! Heh Heh nah jokes, I just love the subject matter. Anything to do with corruption in society, lawlessness, or indeed law that is corrupt (in other words LAW ITSELF) is gonna strike a chord with me. Damn I wanted to grab my Bandanna, Graffiti cans & and righteous indignation, and run straight through Parliament with this song blaring through my headphones.
NOTE - I do not own a bandanna or any graffiti cans. I do however lay claim to possession of the third item

VERSES - SMASHED IT. BOTH D AND Midi. Hard lyrics, great delivery and patterning. All the hip hop ‘hardcore’ heads will no doubt bug out to this one. PLAY VERY LOUD!

CHORUS - SICK! Straight to the point. LAWS ARE MADE BY PEOPLE. Indeed. And that’s why they don’t work.

09 - REDEMPTION.

Okay, I feature on this. An intro and Verse 2. But by no means is this a cause for me to feel or show inclination by choosing to place this song in my top five. No I mean it honestly! Nah seriously though I love this song and was very happy when asked to appear in it. The funny thing is on a previous collaboration between Dekay and myself - THE CHURCH OF THE GOLDEN SAINTS - (you can find that on Bandcamp) Dekay asked me to be the priest, and on this one she chose to be the priest. So worth a mention that. Erm, yes I know I said it was funny… I just said out loud and I had to admit it didn’t actually make me laugh, but I thought it worth a mention. No? Uhm… Err…ahem…Well… Moving on. The title itself explains the actual subject matter, so I won’t waffle on. The beat is really chilled, sax and all. Great production. Actually while I am here, the overall production on the whole album is brilliant, not one negative thing to say about any of the instrumentals. So props to both MATT, MIDI and Dekay in her role in co-producer in certain songs, have I got that right D? Anyway, listen to this one people, another really beautiful and catchy hook, coupled with a surprise bridge. I say surprised because I did not know that I was actually doing the bridge with her until I was in the studio. Heh heh but it was all good got it right in the end after a few reads.

08 - LOVE.

Love eh? The things we do for it, to things we do to lose it, and the things we do to gain it. This is a very poignant song, and very much up my own alley. I love these highly charged raw emotional songs. Lyrics from the heart here. Very good story telling style, much like the rest of the album actually. (Eat your heart out Slick Rick HAH). Anywayz… I grew up amidst the type of issues spoken about in this song, and can relate. Very beautiful song. Verses are raw as I said, and the hook it catchy as well. A clincher for me will always be the hook in most cases, and this one clinches it for me, and makes it to my top 5 list.

P.S. This is quite funny, when we were listening to this the other day, I didn’t recognise it was actually me at the beginning of the song doing the intro alongside MATT.

04 - THE FEAR OF AGEING.

Another great intro skit by Ross Sutherland at the beginning of this one. I know Ross is an actor, and damn, I love the accent on this one. Reminds me of one of my Brit gangster flicks, proper like, know what I mean geezer? Right, C’mon, be honest, most of us are scared of getting old init? And the only ones that ain’t scared? Well…that’s coz they’re ALREADY old init? Duh, obviously! Heh Heh. Loving the slow tempo on this one which invited and compliments an absolutely chilled, mellow slow flow style. A great one for the “Rap-a-long crowd”

Great chorus, love the words

“I DON’T FEEL SAFE ANYMORE,
DON’T RECOGNISE MY FACE ANYMORE"

And the backing vocals are excellent, great job reciting this one.

FUCK IT, 2 MORE HONOURABLE MENTIONS –

03 - DEFEND YOURSELF

While not actually in my top five, I mention it as it has a great video to go with, and would have been one of my next choices anyway. Also my mate Faye sings some amazing vocals in it too. Ya can catch her on my very 1st album SLAVE TO THE WORD also on a song called LORNA where she abso-fucking-lutely sung the SHIT out of it lol. Here is a link to DEFEND YOURSELF VIDEO -

11 - BLUE SKIES

Probably one of the most uplifting choruses on the album, and is with great verses from D and S.C
If I had to pick the most quotable…err…well quotable from this album it would be from this song, With Dekay’s Line –

“Don’t Ever Forget What A Gift It Is To Be Pain"

I am sure my missus Chogaia will appreciate that line, as she herself lives with chronic pain every day and has done for years. Talking of CHOGAIA, here is HER TOP 7 IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER -

______________________________________________________________

CHOGAIA’S TOP 7 (In No Particular Order)

1. IMPOSSIBLE DREAM
2. THE FEAR OF AGEING
3. LAWS ARE MADE BY PEOPLE FEAT.MIDI INTELLECT
4. LOVE
5. WHERE THE LEGENDS LIE
6. REDEMPTION FEAT RUKAS
7. STELLA STELLA

______________________________________________________________

In summary, this is in my opinion her best work. And indeed will be very hard to top, I am sure she will try. Respect to all the features on this album, I can honestly say everyone did a great job there was not one weak feature to let the project down as a whole. From one lyricist to another, you are definitely still moving forward D. And you should most definitely be proud of this. Respect. And again respect to everybody that worked on this album in one capacity or the other.

Goodbye Please Come Again.
